Ils sont quatre jeunes gens, trois femmes et un homme, chanteurs et multi-instrumentistes, vêtus d’étonnants bonnets et costumes traditionnels ukrainiens, à concocter une potion musicale assez magique, faite de polyphonies traditionnelles et de rythmes hypnotiques. Cette « trad-transe » à dimension fortement spirituelle et politique commence à tourner de plus en souvent en dehors des frontières ukrainiennes où on la regarde comme un objet musical « world » totalement unique en son genre. Dans leur pays, DakhaBrakha est devenu un symbole de la crise d’identité du pays et de la volonté de faire émerger une nouvelle société. Le groupe qui comptait parmi les occupants de la place Maidan à Kiev fin 2013 incarne musicalement le désir d’une jeunesse désireuse de renouer avec son histoire et de tourner la page russe. D’où un répertoire qui revisite largement de vieilles chansons folkloriques aux mélodies magnétiques, dans des arrangements qui mêlent instruments traditionnels du monde entier et rythmiques sous influence hip hop.
