En 2011, Dan Tepfer avait proposé ses propres Variations sur les Variations Goldberg du maître. Douze ans après, le Franco-Américain revient à la musique de Bach, interprétant les Inventions composées en 1723 comme une série d’études pour travailler l’indépendance des voix mélodiques à deux mains. Partant de ce matériau original, qu’il interprète conformément au texte, Tepfer développe en miroir ces « réinventions » ou, ainsi qu’il les désigne dans les titres, des « inventions improvisées », soit des pièces dans lesquelles il improvise ses propres mélodies, faisant appel à son bagage de jazzman (il a fréquenté pendant dix ans Lee Konitz en duo) et essayant de rester fidèle aux principes qui ont conduit Bach à développer un tel répertoire.
