Une musique entêtante, des lignes, des traversées, des tournoiements… Le matériau chorégraphique est minimal, mais les possibilités infinies. Si l’on ajoute à cela la collaboration avec Philip Glass pour la musique, et Sol LeWitt pour le film, alors voilà une œuvre totale d’abstraction et de maîtrise, de concordance du temps et de l’espace, de l’image et du geste, du volume et de l’aplat. Radicale, la première partie de la pièce pose le tout : uniquement des marches traçant l’espace d’un côté à l’autre. Le solo qui s’ensuit s’inscrit dans la droite ligne du mémorable extrait d’Einstein on the Beach, avant de laisser place à des quatuors qui dessinent sur le sol des figures géométriques.
Dance, toujours vivante
Le film ajoute une dimension particulière, comme une répétition à la répétition, composé de cent cinquante plans qui sont la chorégraphie même. Un jeu sur le cadre, le zoom, la synchronisation qui vient se superposer au premier récit de la danse live, comme des présences fantomatiques… Dance est une expérience qui traverse les décennies. Aujourd’hui, nous devons à Marie-Hélène Rebois le (re)tournage de la séquence filmique avec les danseurs du Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon. Une actualisation certes, mais à l’identique, et voici une œuvre qui prend pleinement sa place dans le répertoire du XXIè siècle. A ne pas manquer.
