Chef-d’œuvre incontesté du courant post moderne, Dance réunit en 1979 trois figures emblématiques des arts minimalistes et conceptuels américains. Philip Glass compose une partition qui se développe graduellement, selon un procédé d’accumulation. Sans contraste perceptible, elle crée chez l’auditeur une sorte d’hypnose acoustique. Epousant la musique, Lucinda Childs procède elle aussi par répétitions, introduisant des variations infimes dans les mouvements. Les danseurs et danseuses se meuvent selon des parcours géométriques complexes, dessinent des lignes et des courbes, rapides et infinies. Le peintre et sculpteur Sol LeWitt réalise quant à lui un film qui, projeté sur un écran de gaze à l’avant de la scène, démultiplie les angles de vue. Les interprètes dansent comme avec leurs ombres géantes, dans des télescopages d’une infinie variété. Par son flux musical fluide et incessant, par sa polyphonie heureuse qu’accompagne une chorégraphie hypnotique, Dance, qui reste d’une étonnante modernité, envoûte. Les danseurs et danseuses du Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, qui s’en emparent avec brio, virevoltent, tournoient et semblent voler de jardin à cour et de cour à jardin, tandis que leurs doubles démultiplient leurs mouvements dans un film tourné à partir de l’original pour l’occasion.
