Chef consacré et débordé, à la fois directeur musical de l’Opéra d’État de Berlin et fondateur du West-Eastern Divan Orchestra composé de jeunes musiciens israéliens et palestiniens, Daniel Barenboim n’a jamais renoncé à s’exprimer comme pianiste au plus haut niveau. Pour ce cycle de concerts, il réalise une performance : jouer en dirigeant du piano l’intégrale des 5 concertos de Beethoven, en trois concerts et trois jours. Et ose à la tête de l’orchestre de la Staatskapelle Berlin le rapprochement de ces standards du répertoire romantique avec des œuvres orchestrales d’Arnold Schoenberg : les Concertos pour piano n° 1 et n° 4 sont associés aux Cinq Pièces opus 16 (le 5), les n° 2 et n° 3 aux Variations pour orchestre (le 6) et enfin « L’Empereur » de Beethoven partage le programme avec le poème symphonique Pelléas et Mélisande composé par Schönberg dix ans avant que Debussy ne conçoive son opéra. Dans un deuxième temps, une semaine plus tard, Daniel Barenboim seul en scène reprendra le chemin de son piano pour un émouvant retour en liberté vers Chopin, hommage amoureux en deux récitals, de Nocturnes en Sonates et de Valses en Etudes. Une double opportunité de retrouver le regard profond et sans emphase porté par le grand pianiste sur l’univers du compositeur polonais.
