Avec Le Collectionneur, vous poussez plus loin votre étude du rapport à l’argent ?
Daniel Benoin : D’un côté, le personnage du Collectionneur démonétise l’argent. Pour lui, les pièces n’ont pas de valeur d’échange, sauf si elles lui permettent d’en acquérir d’autres. On est donc loin de ces formes modernes d’accumulation que j’ai abordées dans mes pièces précédentes. D’un autre côté, le personnage de l’Argent des autres disait : « je ne fais pas ça pour ce que peut me procurer l’argent, je fais ça pour l’argent ». Il y avait déjà en lui un fétichisme de l’objet.
Cette obsession du numismate, en apparence inoffensive, l’est-elle tant que ça ?
D.B : Arpad de la Castille, le collectionneur qu’interprètera François Marthouret, vit à l’extérieur du monde, seul avec sa femme. Un jour, on lui amène une pièce dont tout le monde pense qu’elle n’existe pas. Il décide de la montrer, mais cette pièce disparaît. A partir de là, l’intrigue s’emballe et le personnage s’enferme dans une spirale qui l’isole encore davantage. Naturellement, le rapport à l’objet témoigne des difficultés que les humains ont dans leurs rapports entre eux. La folie des collectionneurs peut tourner à la paranoïa et relève de manques affectifs profonds.
Privilégiez-vous une approche psychologique du personnage?
D.B : Il y a dix ans, si un metteur en scène disait qu’il adoptait une approche psychologique, il était immédiatement banni comme non-brechtien. Aujourd’hui, on sait que c’est un ingrédient de cuisine comme un autre, parfois de grande qualité. Comme pour la psychanalyse. Depuis trente ans, elle ne peut plus être un support officiel de la dramaturgie. Pourtant, à partir de 68, et jusqu’aux années 80, la psychanalyse et l’ensemble des sciences humaines servaient de quadrillage d’interprétation à la lecture des textes. Il est évident que la manie de la collection relève d’un archétype de la psyché. C’est pourquoi j’ai décidé de créer un spectacle bleu – où tout sera bleu – un spectacle qui donne à appréhender l’action à travers l’univers mental du collectionneur, un peu comme une caméra subjective.

Ou comme si le personnage du collectionneur était aussi le narrateur ?
D.B : C’est vrai que la pièce est adaptée d’un roman. Mais les romans sont souvent régis par une pensée dominante. Et si l’on ne se débarasse pas de cette cette pensée, souvent portée par le personnage principal, le récit passe très mal la rampe. C’est pourquoi, en face de ce collectionneur passionné, il y aura des personnages munis de très fortes personnalités.
Avez-vous accompagné le travail d’adaptation ?
D.B : Au départ, je devais simplement produire la pièce de Christine et Olivier Orban, et je leur donnais des conseils dans l’adaptation. C’est un problème complexe que le passage d’un genre à l’autre. Mais à mon âge, on commence à bien repérer les qualités et les défauts d’un texte. Et à force de travail en commun, je me suis approprié la pièce, et j’ai décidé de la monter moi-même.
Pour quelles raisons ?
D.B : Comme Guitry à qui l’on a reproché de ne pas avoir vu l’Histoire se dérouler autour de lui, le milieu des collectionneurs paraît hors du temps. Or, je veux montrer comment le rapport d’un homme à l’objet peut remplacer celui de l’homme aux autres hommes. Cela me fait penser aussi à l’obsession pour les tôles froissées d’un Ballard dans Crash. Deuxième raison : au départ, ce n’était pas vraiment un texte pour moi. C’est une pièce de facture naturaliste, traditionnelle. Et le défi est exaltant car cela oblige à créer sa propre syntaxe.
