Pour son dernier programme de l’année à la tête de l’Orchestre De Paris, Daniel Harding compte faire découvrir et si possible aimer au public parisien qui en ignore tout une partition à laquelle nos voisins anglais vouent un véritable culte. Son titre : Dream of Gerontius. Son compositeur : Edward Elgar. Créé en 1900, ce grand oratorio d’une splendeur chorale toute britannique et aux fortes résonnances wagnériennes est souvent surnommé le « Parsifal anglais ». Il raconte, inspiré d’un poème du Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890), le voyage vers Dieu de l’âme de Gerontius, guidé par son ange gardien… Les anglais raffolent de ce chef-d’œuvre d’Elgar et, eu égard à l’intérêt que nos amis d’Outre-Manche ont si souvent manifesté à la musique française (Berlioz, Chabrier, etc.), il serait injuste que nous ne fassions pas confiance au plus parisien d’entre eux, l’actuel directeur musical de l’Orchestre de Paris, pour ouvrir un peu nos œillères. D’autant que le surdoué Harding sera idéalement entouré pour l’occasion de la divine Magdalena Kožená (mezzo) en tête de distribution, mais aussi d’Andrew Staples (ténor) et John Relyea (basse), l’un et l’autre familier de l’ouvrage, et du Chœur de l’Orchestre de Paris (Lionel Sow, chef de chœur).
