Dans quel état d’esprit abordez-vous cette mission aux commandes de l’ONJ ?
Daniel Yvinec : Ce que je souhaite, c’est développer des projets qui correspondent à ma vision de la musique, celle que je développe dans des univers où se côtoient le Jazz dans ce qu’il a de plus ancré dans son histoire, la musique électronique, la pop , la chanson, et où se catapulte toute la vie qui grouille dans le monde de la musique et des arts en général.
« Directeur artistique » et non « Directeur musical » : cela change tout ?
D. Y. : Oui, ça change tout, c’est sûr. Il est indispensable d’ailleurs que soit clairement perçue cette différence. Ma mission consiste à concevoir des projets artistiques, et à les confier aux acteurs qui me semblent les plus à même de les porter : arrangeurs, chorégraphes, vidéastes et autres artistes associés. Une fois le projet conçu, j’effectue un véritable travail de direction artistique, comparable à ce que je fais depuis quelques années maintenant sur des projets discographiques. Je travaille main dans la main avec les arrangeurs à l’élaboration de l’écriture, leur donne des directions de couleurs, des scénari, on corrige des choses ensemble, etc…

Dans votre esprit, l’ONJ est-il nécessairement un “big-band”?
D. Y. : Dans le cas de la formation que j’ai réunie autour de mon projet, il s’agit d’une équipe de dix musiciens que j’ai recrutés après deux mois de recherches assez intensives parmi les jeunes musiciens ultra talentueux que l’on peut trouver chez nous. J’ai choisi des personnalités, majoritairement des poly-talentueux : poly-instrumentistes, poly-cultivés… L’idée étant d’avoir accès avec les mêmes dix personnes à une variété de couleurs très large, du petit orchestre de chambre au « tout électronique », de la moyenne formation Jazz à des sons pop….
Le volet pédagogique aura une place importante dans votre projet…
D. Y. : Le Jazz peut et doit être expliqué, pas seulement aux enfants mais aux grands aussi en donnant un certain nombre d’informations qui permettront de motiver ceux qui croient que cette musique est réservée à un petit cercle de connaisseurs. Il faut communiquer sur le bonheur de cette musique, sur les joies infinies de l’improvisation, de l’interaction, la force d’un rythme, la couleur d’un accord.
Vos deux premiers programmes sont des hommages à deux voix légendaires : Billie Holiday en concert dès le mois de mars pour les concerts inauguraux dans le programme « Broadway in Satin », et Robert Wyatt pour votre premier album « Around Robert Wyatt » à la tête de l’ONJ en avril. Quel sens faut-il donner à ces choix ?
D. Y. : Il faut d’abord y voir mon goût immodéré pour la musique populaire, la voix, et les ponts que l’on peut établir entre la chanson et l’improvisation. Billie Holiday, parce que c’est l’interprète incontournable par excellence. Parce qu’après elle, on ne peut tellement rien faire qui lui ressemble que tout est paradoxalement ouvert… C’est aussi l’idée d’habiller de nouvelles parures ces chansons intemporelles. J’ai confié à Alban Darche cette mission délicate. Quant à Wyatt, j’écoute sa musique depuis que je suis adolescent. Elle est un pont idéal entre la pop et le Jazz. Elle est ouverte, elle respire et n’a rien d’autre en elle que sa propre beauté. Wyatt est un artiste libre comme l’air. J’ai voulu là aussi faire un travail de réappropriation. Pour certaines chansons, nous avons décidé avec l’arrangeur Vincent Artaud, un gars brillant, de ne garder que la mélodie et de changer entièrement les harmonies. J’ai dit à Wyatt que j’aime trop ses disques pour chercher à m’en approcher, c’est pour cette raison et aussi parce que les belles choses sont universelles, que j’ai sollicité les voix a capella d’autres artistes : Camille, Arno, Yaël Naïm, Daniel Darc, Rokia Traoré et Irène Jacob ont accepté de jouer ce jeu. Sur scène, nous jouerons autour des voix enregistrées et avec des images du réalisateur Antoine Carlier.
