L’impressionnant cycle Mahler imaginé par Daniele Gatti pour la scène du Théâtre du Châtelet et commencé en octobre 2009 s’achèvera le 1er décembre 2011. Cette série remarquable célèbre à la fois le 150ème anniversaire de la naissance de Mahler en 2010 puis celui de son 100ème anniversaire en 2011. Marquant l’apogée de la période viennoise, ce concert exceptionnel met au programme la Symphonie n° 8 "des Mille"« dont la création à Munich, mais quatre ans après l’achèvement de la partition (en 1907, ndlr), fut sans doute le plus grand succès que Mahler connut de son vivant » rappelle le chef italien de l’Orchestre National de France. « Il y a du drame et de l’humour dans la musique de Mahler, beaucoup de nervosité, des souvenirs des musiques populaires juives, avec trompette et clarinette, juxtaposés à de grands horizons qui s’ouvrent sans fin. J’aime ces contrastes, mais certaines interprétations que j’ai pu entendre m’ont blessé : il est tellement facile d’aller dans le sens du kitsch, de l’exagération ! » conclut Daniele Gatti. Pour restituer toute la démesure visionnaire et la puissance humaniste de cette partition monumentale par sa durée et ses effectifs, le chef italien de Paris sera épaulé par le Choeur de Radio France, la Maîtrise de Radio France et les voix solistes Erin Wall, Melanie Diener, Kerstin Avemo, Christine Knorren, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Nikolai Andrei Schukoff, Detlef Roth et James Morris.
