Depuis sa nomination en 2008 à la tête de l’Orchestre National de France (ONF), le chef Daniele Gatti nous a laissé une impression mitigée. Si l’on est séduit par sa gestique charismatique et sa propension à un certain lyrisme (il a d’ailleurs remis l’opéra au répertoire de l’ONF), on reste souvent musicalement frustré, notamment dans le répertoire germanique, où l’on perd la dimension architecturale des œuvres. Il est vrai que ce n’était pas facile pour le chef italien de succéder à Kurt Masur, qui excellait dans cette musique (on lui doit l’homogénéité remarquable des cordes du National). En ouverture de saison, Daniele Gatti s’attelle justement à Schumann (Symphonie n°3) et Wagner (extraits du Crépuscule des dieux). On le retrouve une semaine plus tard dans la suite de son intégrale Mahler, avec cette fois-ci la Symphonie n°5 et les Kindertotenlieder (avec en soliste la voix aussi intelligente qu’expressive de Matthias Goerne).
