Comment se sont déroulés vos premiers contacts avec l’Orchestre National de France ?
Daniele Gatti : Après notre premier concert en 2005, je suis revenu plusieurs fois diriger cet orchestre. J’ai trouvé une formidable situation humaine et musicale. C’est un orchestre de très haut niveau. Le travail de Kurt Masur a été remarquable, en particulier au niveau des couleurs et de la musicalité. L’ONF possède également une très bonne balance entre les différents pupitres.
Quel type de programmation allez-vous instaurer ?
D.G. : J’ai déjà joué aussi bien du Schubert que du Stravinsky avec l’Orchestre. Il faut avoir un très large spectre de répertoire. Je ne veux pas que l’orchestre se spécialise.
Vous dirigez régulièrement à l’opéra. Comptez-vous développer le répertoire lyrique avec l’ONF ?
D.G. : Un orchestre symphonique qui joue à l’opéra demeure une expérience. Le premier objectif, c’est la saison symphonique. Mais le travail lyrique offre un échange passionnant d’un point de vue artistique, et développe la flexibilité de l’orchestre. Il y a déjà quelques projets, au Châtelet, au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. Je pense ainsi diriger des œuvres de Verdi ou de Wagner.
Quel regard portez-vous sur la révolution baroque ? Allez-vous faire de la musique ancienne avec l’ONF ?
D.G. : Aucun des musiciens de la révolution baroque n’a vécu il y a deux cents ou deux cent cinquante ans pour savoir comment c’était. Et aujourd’hui, nous n’avons pas les mêmes salles de concert, nous jouons dans des auditoriums et non plus dans des châteaux. L’essentiel, c’est l’esprit de l’œuvre. Je pourrais diriger Beethoven avec une formation sur instruments anciens ou avec un orchestre moderne possédant soixante cordes, je chercherais toujours la même chose, à savoir révéler la modernité de l’écriture de Beethoven.
Quelle place allez-vous accorder à la musique contemporaine ?
D.G. : En octobre dernier, j’ai dirigé la Notation VIIde Boulez avec l’ONF. J’aime également la musique de Ligeti, de Varèse. Mais dans une soirée il ne faut pas faire que ce répertoire. Le secret, c’est un bon dosage dans le programme. Par ailleurs, je suis ouvert à tous les styles. Si une pièce est bonne, peu importe pour moi si elle est tonale, atonale ou dodécaphonique, c’est pourquoi j’aime avoir le panorama musical le plus large. Je ne suis donc pas intéressé par l’idée de compositeur en résidence.
Quel engagement pédagogique doit avoir un orchestre symphonique comme l’ONF ?
D.G. : J’aimerais que ce soit naturel pour un jeune d’aller au concert. Ne créons pas d’obstacles. On ne doit pas faire croire qu’il faut être cultivé pour aller écouter un orchestre. La musique parle au cœur. Je pense que nous, musiciens, ne devons pas non plus être trop sérieux ; le classique n’est pas un monde fermé.
