Philip Glass compte parmi les compositeurs lyriques les plus prolifiques aujourd’hui. Quelques-uns de ses opéras ont profondément marqué leur temps. En 1976, la création d’Einstein on the Beach avec le metteur en scène Robert Wilson au Festival d’Avignon, consacrait le compositeur américain comme un audacieux rénovateur de l’art lyrique ; l’œuvre, en quatre actes, longue de près de cinq heures et adoptant une structure répétitive, s’affranchit de toute narrativité linéaire. Satyagraha (1980), inspiré par la vie de Gandhi, puis Akhnaten (1983), évocation en égyptien, akkadien et hébreu du pharaon Akhénaton, s’inscrivent dans une veine similaire.
Première en France
Depuis, la musique de Philip Glass a évolué vers une conciliation des séquences répétitives – qui restent sa signature – avec un certain néoclassicisme. Dans le même temps, l’œuvre lyrique, si elle accorde toujours une large place à l’imaginaire voire à la méditation, est devenue plus narrative, s’appuyant sur l’adaptation de textes littéraires, tels ces Enfants terribles d’après Cocteau présentés l’an dernier par l’Athénée. Dans la colonie pénitentiaire (1980) emprunte son sujet à la nouvelle de Kafka. L’opéra, comme le texte, porte une dénonciation des systèmes totalitaires mais aussi, plus insidieusement, pose la question de la possibilité de cette dénonciation, voire de tout jugement. La production de Richard Brunel, la première à être montée en France, a été saluée avec enthousiasme à sa création l’an dernier à Lyon.
