« Dans la jungle des villes est souvent perçue comme une pièce de jeunesse dans l’œuvre de Brecht, éloignée de son futur théâtre épique. Toutefois, cette fable initiatique suit un cours implacable dans la révélation d’une double trajectoire. Dans le croisement de ces destinées, il y a d’abord le jeune Georges Garga au commencement de sa vie d’homme qui va peu à peu forger sa carapace dans ce combat pour devenir adulte endurci. Face à lui, Shlink, un homme d’affaires malais un peu trouble qui aspire à se défaire d’un masque cousu à même son visage. La rencontre reste impossible entre les deux hommes prêts pourtant à tous les sacrifices dans cet affrontement violent. La pièce parle de l’indépassable solitude de l’être dans un monde soumis aux moyens de production de la ville anonyme, à la manière du Procès de Kafka. L’employé Garga dans sa bibliothèque de prêt est agressé par le douteux Shlink qui lui propose d’acheter son opinion sur un livre insignifiant.
Le négociant accomplit un parcours à rebours
Garga refuse, les enchères montent, le combat s’engage. Le résistant ne cède pas aux valeurs d’échange ; il est prêt à aller très loin, il sacrifie compagne, sœur, emploi : des souffrances nécessaires pour « se rendre compte du monde » et s’en libérer. Rimbaldien d’abord, le jeune homme (Bruno Blairet) va se transformer pour entrer dans une vie pratique responsable, faite de solitude amère et de renonciation. Quant à Shlink (Philippe Morier-Genoud), il se déleste plutôt pour retrouver l’immigré de sept ans qu’il était, à son arrivée aux Etats-Unis. Le négociant accomplit un parcours à rebours afin de toucher à sa candeur perdue. La solitude urbaine en temps de crise est aiguë. Les villes s’agrandissent avec les immigrations successives et la nécessité d’organiser une vie productive. Les problématiques d’immigration répondent aux rapports Nord/Sud et s’universalisent. Constat d’échec brechtien : un homme se construit dans l’amertume quand un autre se déconstruit dans la douleur.»
