Le soir du réveillon de l’an 2000, deux hommes se retrouvent dans l’ambiance feutrée d’un petit salon d’ambassade pour honorer une ancienne promesse : fêter ensemble la fin du millénaire. Ils attendent la femme qui a enchanté leur jeunesse par sa beauté et sa pureté et se souviennent des quelques gouttes de sang mêlées en un pacte d’amitié qui devait résister au temps. Mais l’Histoire leur a fait prendre des routes si différentes que leurs retrouvailles semblent bien incertaines et l’ombre de la femme adorée plane entre eux comme une Erynie impitoyable. Entre l’Homme qui traque le dessous des choses, médecin tortionnaire devenu ambassadeur de la dictature immonde, et l’Homme ressuscité, qui s’est compromis dans les affaires et est devenu le suppôt d’un capitalisme dont les victimes sud-américaines savent combien il fut le complice des bourreaux, le dialogue est impossible. L’un bâfre, boit, s’empiffre et s’enivre, gueulant et éructant, pissant ses excès et vomissant ses regrets, l’autre, dyspeptique, glacial et gêné, ne parvient pas à digérer ce que sa propre lâcheté a fait de lui.
La mauvaise conscience des bourreaux comme mémorial des victimes
Extravagante et surréaliste, amère et drolatique, cocasse et ironique, la mise en scène d’Agathe Alexis propose une « plongée en apnée dans les eaux glacées » des heures monstrueuses de la barbarie moderne. François Frapier et Michel Ouimet sont comme l’auguste et le clown blanc : l’un caricatural et brutal, l’autre compassé et plus retenu, croyant pouvoir conduire la danse des souvenirs alors qu’il a perdu pied depuis longtemps. La force du propos de Susana Lastreto-Prieto est qu’elle parvient à faire parler les bourreaux et les renégats en évitant le piège de l’excuse et de la compréhension. Les deux personnages masculins, abjects chacun dans leur genre, demeurent des crapules et rien ne vient les sauver, pas même le visage d’ange de Marie Delmares, la Femme disparue qui n’a pas oublié les serments d’avant la trahison, toujours présente pour rappeler l’honneur des victimes, fidèle à la vie à la mort…
