Dans la pénombre d’un petit matin, le cirque Natchav arrive en ville. Au nom de la sécurité, les autorités somment les saltimbanques d’aller s’installer sur un terrain vague en périphérie de la cité. Révolte, échauffourée : un des acrobates est arrêté et mis en prison. Circassiens et prisonniers se mettent alors en tête de réaliser une évasion spectaculaire, pleine d’ingéniosité et de rebondissements. En romani, « natchav » signifie la fuite : ainsi va le cirque, voyageur impénitent. « Sa mesure temporelle est l’instant » et son espace, sans frontière : le contraire de la prison, où l’espace est réduit et le temps distendu. « La liberté (…) dont nous voulons parler avec Natchav est une idée sensible et contagieuse ; elle est un point d’origine et un mouvement perpétuel indissociable de tout être qui veut rester vivant. » disent les membres des Ombres portées, qui mettent tous les moyens circassiens au service de cet hommage au nomadisme et à l’indépendance.
