C’est à la croisée de l’Orient et de l’Occident que Shantala Shivalingappa et Padmini Chettur ont tracé les lignes de leur art, taillant les codes de la tradition au fil de la modernité. Née à Madras mais élevée en France, Shantala Shivalingappa pratique en virtuose le kuchipudi, danse originaire d’un village de l’Andra Pradesh (sud-est de l’Inde), toute en contrastes, volutes légères et fringantes ondulations. Travaillée en profondeur par ses expériences avec Maurice Béjart, Peter Brook, Bartabas et Pina Bausch, elle extrait l’essence du style traditionnel qu’elle distille avec le geste contemporain. Padmini Chettur puise quant à elle dans le bhârata natyam, enfanté dans le Tamil-Nadu (sud de l’Inde). Dans Beautiful Thing1, pièce pour cinq interprètes, elle épure jusqu’au minimaliste cette danse extrêmement codifiée et richement ornementée, pour en sertir la rigoureuse énergie et la sensualité discrète… pour trouver un mouvement en prise avec elle-même et le monde d’aujourd’hui.
