Comme son joli nom italianisé l’annonce, Danzas Sinfonia est une version élargie du groupe Danzas qui réunit, autour du piano du leader, un sextet à cordes, un quintet à vents et une section de percussions, l’ensemble étant dirigé par Jean-Charles Richard. Dix-sept musiciens sur scène, qui mêlent instrumentistes classiques et jazzmen, pour un répertoire inspiré par un imaginaire marin, marqué par la Méditerranée. Dans la continuité d’une carrière qui s’affranchit résolument des genres, Danzas Sinfonia se présente comme « une suite d’humeurs poétiques inventées en un seul geste musical » selon les mots de son auteur. « Chaque mouvement de la mer est associé à une danse. Le souvenir des sensations de l’enfance que Chantal Thomas nomme « l’écume des rires », et le désir de se perdre dans l’immensité bleue à l’infini ont guidé ces compositions », explique-t-il, en se référant à Une barque sur l’océan de Maurice Ravel.
