À 23 ans, Richard Wagner compose Das Liebesverbot, l’interdiction d’aimer. Pas très drôle me direz-vous, et pourtant il s’agit d’un opéra comique, inspiré par Mesure pour mesure de William Shakespeare. C’est l’histoire de Friedrich, gouverneur du Royaume de Sicile, qui, à l’approche du Carnaval, entend imposer des mœurs plus austères à son peuple débauché. Claudio, jeune noble aux mœurs légères, en fait les frais. Il est condamné à mort. Isabella, sa sœur, le sauvera et dénoncera l’hypocrisie puritaine de Friedrich. Cet ouvrage méconnu est à découvrir à l’Opéra national du Rhin, dans une nouvelle production dirigée par le très dynamique Constantin Trinks (qui s’était vu confier la direction de l’ouvrage à Bayreuth en 2013) et mise en scène par Mariame Clément. Le chef allemand fera tinter les castagnettes du prélude aussi brillamment que l’ensemble de cette partition rossinienne.
