On ne présente plus cette grande voix du jazz moderne, géant de son instrument, le saxophone soprano, et animateur inspiré et infatigable de l’héritage coltranien, par exemple au sein de son célèbre groupe Quest (avec Richard Beirach). C’est en écoutant John Coltrane au Birdland de New York au milieu des années 60 que Liebman voit soudain son destin musical basculer… Peu après, il deviendra l’élève de Charles Lloyd et Lennie Tristano (1967-1968), puis membre des groupes d’Elvin Jones, le batteur historique de son idole, et bientôt de Miles Davis… Liebman est aussi fortement engagé dans le champ de l’enseignement. Il a fondé l’International Association of Schools of Jazz et est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages pédagogiques de référence. Sa rencontre avec les musiciens de l’Ensemble Intercontemporain et leur directrice musicale Susanna Malkki est un événement. Elle repose sur le projet de confier sa musique à trois compositeurs de jazz – Riccardo Del Fra, Timo Hietala et Christophe Dal Sasso – pour donner naissance à trois créations mondiales dans lesquelles il interviendra en soliste, relectures orchestrées de deux tryptiques de Liebman : The Tree (Roots, Limbs, Branches) et Colors (Red, Gray, Yellow).
