La musique de Franz Schreker est d’un post-romantisme opulent et vénéneux, marqué par Strauss, Mahler, Schoenberg. Si les opéras Die Gezeichnete (Les Stigmatisés) et Die ferne Klang (Le Son lointain) ont été récemment redécouverts sur les scènes françaises (à Lyon et Strasbourg), Irrelohe (1924), sixième opéra de Schreker, reste un chef-d’œuvre inconnu. Le livret, écrit par le compositeur, narre les derniers jours d’une lignée maudite, jusqu’à destruction par le feu du château de ces comtes déments et violeurs. La musique, autant que le texte, sent le soufre. La direction en est confiée à l’un des meilleurs spécialistes de cette époque, Bernhard Kontarsky.
