Après maintes expériences musicales passionnantes dont de mémorables « Gesualdo Variations », David Chevallier a ressurgi, fidèle à sa hardiesse et son obsession de ne jamais se répéter, sur un nouveau terrain de jeu aménagé autour d’un trio composé de Sébastien Boisseau à la contrebasse et Christophe Lavergne à la batterie : les standards. « Le jazz n’est pas tant un idiome bien défini qu’une façon de jouer de la musique, avec liberté et inventivité. Mais après tous ces mélanges stylistiques, j’ai réalisé que je n’avais jamais conçu de programme consacré à ce qui est l’une des fondations du jazz : les fameux standards » explique le guitariste. « Bien sûr, ces mélodies sont vues à travers mon prisme personnel, chaque chanson stimulant mon imaginaire à sa façon. Le procédé reste finalement le même, que je m’attaque à un madrigal de Gesualdo, un tube des Beatles, un air de Dowland, ou une chanson de Cole Porter : quelque chose d’indicible déclenche le processus de transfiguration, la création de l’avatar ».
