L’audace harmonique de Carlo Gesualdo – dont certains des plus beaux madrigaux poussent très loin dans le contexte de leur XVIème siècle natal les limites de la tonalité – a inspiré à David Chevallier l’une de ses aventures les plus fortes. Musicien touche-à-tout et créateur de sa propre compagnie pluridisciplinaire Le SonArt, son projet « Gesualdo Variations » associe le prestigieux ensemble vocal baroque A Sei Voci et un gang d’instrumentistes débridés nommés Christophe Monniot (saxophones), Dominique Pifarély (violon), Guillaume Roy (alto) et Alain Grange (violoncelle), pour une relecture audacieuse de l’art polyphonique du grand maître de la Renaissance. Le spectacle est sous-titré « Les madrigaux imaginaires du prince assassin ». Ce Prince de Venosa est en effet resté célèbre pour ne pas plaisanter avec les principes : le 16 octobre 1590 à Naples, ayant surpris sa femme en flagrant délit d’infidélité, il la tua sauvagement en multipliant les blessures dans la région du bas-ventre, et tua aussi son amant qui resta pendu jusqu’à ce que son corps pourrisse.
