Comment se présente votre spectacle ?
David Fauvel : Les deux pièces ne sont pas mélangées, elles constituent deux spectacles d’une heure chacun. Desdémone est une adaptation d’Othello et Ophélie une adaptation d’Hamlet. A chaque fois, on ne garde que trois ou quatre personnages, ne conservant que les plus importants. J’adapte le texte de Shakespeare mais il ne s’agit pas d’une réécriture : le texte est conservé.
Pourquoi ne garder que ce que vous appelez l’essentiel ?
D. F. : Pour moi, Shakespeare, c’est très poussiéreux, plein de choses qui ne me parlent plus, notamment dans leur aspect historique. L’essentiel, dans Othello, c’est de comprendre comment on peut parvenir à tuer par jalousie. Dans Hamlet, c’est un peu plus compliqué car Ophélie est un personnage qui a peu de choses à dire dans la pièce. Mais ce travail est aussi un amusement : ainsi, on joue avec le personnage d’Ophélie, cette vierge, cet ange sali qui finit par tomber dans l’ordure.
Pourquoi privilégier les figures féminines ?
D. F. : Le rapport à la féminité, à la sensualité, au couple, m’intéresse beaucoup. Ainsi que le rapport à la sexualité, au fantasme, à l’animalité, le rapport entre l’érotisme et la mort. Il y a quelque chose de magnifique chez Desdémone, cette femme très moderne qui assume ouvertement ses propres fantasmes et qui est tuée pour cela. Quant à Ophélie, ce sont les autres qui la salissent : le monde pourri joue avec elle parce qu’elle est naïve et amoureuse. Néanmoins, je veux éviter le parallèle entre les deux. Voilà pourquoi dans Ophélie, c’est une femme qui jouera les personnages de Claudius et Hamlet et un homme qui jouera les femmes. Nous évitons ainsi l’effet de miroir entre les deux pièces et cela nous permet de jouer avec le théâtre, les conventions et Shakespeare lui-même.

Quelle scénographie choisissez-vous ?
D. F. : Nous faisons un théâtre d’acteurs avant tout. Le travail sur l’image est important (il y a des voilages, de la fumée, des masques, de l’eau, de la matière) mais le décor, le texte, la musique et la lumière sont au même rang de matériau. Les acteurs passent avant tout ; ils jouent et cassent le jeu, jouant à jouer et à défaire leur jeu, ce qui révèle d’autant mieux les personnages. En cassant son jeu, l’acteur redevient lui-même : cela révèle son humanité ainsi que celle du personnage.
Pourquoi aborder Shakespeare par « le fracas et la furie » ?
D. F. : Nous vivons dans un monde absurde et les histoires qu’on raconte le sont tout autant. Comment arriver à tuer ? Pourquoi manipuler jusqu’à rendre fou ? J’aime cette folie des personnages et veux préserver son aspect inexplicable. Je ne veux pas d’un théâtre pédagogique. Tout n’est pas à expliquer et c’est difficile, d’ailleurs, de tout expliquer. Ce spectacle va très vite : c’est un match de boxe où le public prend des coups. On ne comprend pas tout : soit on accepte, soit on cherche à tout prix des explications et alors on passe à côté…
