Pour votre deuxième disque, vous revenez à Bach. Pourquoi cet ancrage de votre discographie dans Bach ?
David Fray : C’est un compositeur qui me nourrit, dont j’ai besoin et qui m’a fait énormément évoluer dans mon approche de l’instrument mais aussi du phrasé, du style, de la respiration… De plus, après le Bach plus complexe de mon précédent disque (ndlr : Partita n°4, Suite Française n°1), je ressentais la nécessité de me confronter à ce Bach plus directement expressif des concertos dont la vitalité emporte tout sur son passage. Il y avait aussi une volonté de ma part de remonter aux origines du concerto pour clavier, origines qui pour moi restent insurpassées pour l’extraordinaire dialogue et fusion entre les deux parties qui le composent.
Quel éclairage avez-vous voulu apporter à ces Concertos de Bach?
D.F. : Je souhaitais surtout que ce disque « vive », que la présence de cette joie irrésistible mais aussi parfois de cette lamentation déchirante soit quasi palpable. L’expression et son rendu étaient toujours ma préoccupation première. Ce sont des œuvres qui requièrent un grand sens de la caractérisation et, dans les mouvements lents en particulier, de faire entendre une « voix », pas seulement la voix chantée mais aussi celle parlée ou celle du récitatif.

Diriez-vous que Bach est au centre de votre univers ?
D.F. : Bach est effectivement le fondement de ce répertoire germanique auquel j’ai décidé de consacrer une grande partie de mon temps. Jouer Bach m’aide considérablement à aborder le reste de mon répertoire. Il est d’ailleurs révélateur que tous les grands compositeurs allemands ou autrichiens venus après lui en aient fait, tôt ou tard, leur pain quotidien. Bach est sûrement le compositeur le plus influent de l’histoire de la musique et à ce titre il est le jalon indispensable pour en comprendre l’évolution.
Comment pourriez-vous décrire votre relation particulière à la musique de Bach?
D.F. : Bach est un commencement mais aussi une fin, une cellule germinale et un aboutissement. Mon rapport à lui est avant tout lyrique, expressif et toute la science qu’il déploie doit, pour moi, être au service de cette humanité-là. Bach a ceci de particulier qu’il est un monde en soi, qu’il peut à la fois se référer a certains archaïsmes du passé comme faire preuve d’une modernité saisissante. Personnellement, il me comble surtout par l’intensité émotionnelle, spirituelle ou religieuse qu’il dégage. Il m’apaise, me console, me fait danser, m’inspire, me parle. C’est un compagnon dont je me sépare difficilement. De plus, il développe une écoute particulière à laquelle je suis très attaché, contrapunctique, à savoir que chaque note compte, que rien n’est inutile chez lui. Il ne connaît pas la futilité.
On sent chez vous le désir constant de rendre la musique expressive, de rendre à Bach toute son actualité, sa vitalité, une forme de liberté…
D.F. : J’aime en effet faire "parler" la musique. Il est vrai également que je cherche à tout prix à éviter certains écueils tels qu’une certaine sévérité qui confine à la rigidité. J’entends chez Bach, en même temps qu’une rigueur de pensée toute protestante, une souplesse et une flexibilité qui sont simplement celles de la vie, celles d’un art en mouvement qui respire et se meut avec naturel.
Dans ce même numéro de La Terrasse consacré à Bach, nous rencontrons Gustav Leonhardt. Quel est votre regard sur son travail sur Bach ?
D.F. : Il est l’un des musiciens que j’admire le plus. Voilà l’exemple de cette rigueur qui évite la sécheresse… Son interprétation de la Passion selon Saint Matthieu est pour moi d’une humanité et d’une densité rares. Il s’agit d’un artiste au service de quelque chose de plus grand que lui, et qui offre la musique avec une humilité bouleversante.
