Pour son premier disque en 2006, David Fray avait esquissé la filiation de Schubert vers Liszt, dans une mise en miroir qu’il renouvelle plus de quinze ans après. Page posthume d’un cycle qui s’apparente aux Impromptus op. 90 et op. 142, le Klavierstücke n°2 D. 946 dévoile des demi-teintes intimes qui contrastent avec la virtuosité plus manifeste de la Wanderer-Fantaisie, que Liszt a adaptée à trois reprises. Pour autant, ce sont les ressources poétiques de l’Adagio, dont le thème est emprunté au Lied éponyme, qui tissent le mieux les affinités avec les pages tirées des deux livres des Années de pèlerinage consacrées à l’Italie que le soliste français a choisies comme réponse aux ondoiements schubertiens, entre la rêverie de Sposalizio, le sentiment passionné du Sonnet 104 de Pétrarque, les scintillements quasi impressionnistes des Jeux d’eaux à la Villa d’Este et la grandiose méditation Après une lecture de Dante. D’un versant des Alpes à l’autre, on retrouve une même puissance évocatrice et une même quête de nouveaux horizons pianistiques.
