Vous dites que monter L’Orestie est « d’utilité publique ». S’agit-il donc d’un projet politique ?
David Géry : C’est forcément un projet politique mais aussi un projet poétique et les deux sont intimement liés dès l’origine chez Eschyle. L’Orestie ne se comprend vraiment que par la troisième pièce, Les Euménides, où triomphe la démocratie. Pour moi, ce projet interroge la situation théâtrale et politique d’aujourd’hui, ce pourquoi il comporte plusieurs étages. C’est aussi un projet sur la transmission, lié à dix années de formation avec les jeunes acteurs qu’il réunit, que j’ai rencontrés dans les lycées et les ateliers où j’ai travaillé, qui ont continué à faire du théâtre après, avec lesquels j’ai gardé des liens et avec lesquels j’avais envie de faire un spectacle. La trilogie pose la question de la prise en main de son destin par le chœur à travers les trois pièces (le chœur manipulé, impuissant, dans Agamemnon, entre en résistance dans Les Choéphores pour fonder la démocratie dans Les Euménides), et en même temps, ce progrès correspond à un projet de prise en main du théâtre par ces jeunes acteurs autour de Maurice Bénichou, Yann Collette, Bruno Blairet qui font office de transmetteurs et leur passent le témoin. J’ai voulu, en cours de travail, qu’ils s’emparent de l’outil théâtral, j’ai écouté leurs propositions et leur ai davantage parlé de qualités humaines que de qualités d’acteur. Jouer L’Orestie va au-delà du simple fait de faire du théâtre, au-delà de faire l’acteur : c’est un projet existentiel parce que politique.

Considérez-vous que monter cette pièce relève d’un théâtre militant ?
D. G. : Théâtre militant… J’ai toujours un peu peur de ce terme souvent mal employé. Il s’agit plutôt d’une replongée aux sources du théâtre qui est en même temps une plongée aux sources de notre désir d’être ensemble. La démocratie est finalement un drôle de concept et notre actualité, qui est celle de la mondialisation économique, en interroge encore et toujours les fondements : où est la démocratie aujourd’hui est quelle est notre part de pouvoir sur la vie civique ? Ce texte fait l’éloge de la démocratie et en même temps la critique : Eschyle n’est pas dupe des défauts de cette magnifique idée utopiste alors qu’il interroge l’éveil de la conscience politique d’un chœur qui se débat entre autonomie et manipulation.
Vous avez adapté et réduit le texte d’Eschyle. Pourquoi ?
D. G. : Je voulais non pas l’actualiser mais montrer son actualité. Les trois pièces sont écrites de manières très différentes. La parole publique est très importante dans la première partie : Agamemnon est l’endroit d’une dénonciation de la politique spectacle, du rapport entre la politique et les médias, de la façon dont le discours politique nous parvient. Le chœur y est manipulé, aveugle. Dans Les Choéphores, le chœur se constitue comme force politique aidant Oreste à tuer sa mère : on a affaire à quelque chose de plus cinématographique, comme une sorte de polar. Dans la troisième pièce, émergent la place publique, le forum, le débat et finalement la concorde et la démocratie. Je voulais un spectacle coup de poing qui nous interroge sur notre monde actuel. Mais en abordant ce moment source de notre théâtre occidental, je ne voulais pas perdre le spectateur. Plutôt l’emmener à travers cette histoire non pas en réduisant l’œuvre mais en trouvant sa quintessence. C’est pourquoi j’ai effectué des coupes, en ôtant ce qui ne me parlait pas, beaucoup dans Les Choéphores et dans Les Euménides, moins dans Agamemnon. Non pas pour une question de durée mais parce que j’avais envie de quelque chose de dense et fort qui nous parle directement.
