Quelle est, pour vous, la question essentielle que pose Stuff Happens ?
David Hare : Cette pièce est shakespearienne, elle pose la question du pouvoir, comme le font tant de pièces de Shakespeare. Elle raconte comment un homme apparemment stupide (Bush) parvient à manipuler un homme apparemment intelligent (Blair). Comme toujours, le pouvoir fait ce qu’il a envie de faire, et tous ceux qui, comme Blair, s’imaginent pouvoir le chevaucher et le mener là où ils veulent vont à leur perte.
S’agit-il d’une pièce militante ?
D. H. : Je ne suis clairement pas un partisan de l’invasion de l’Irak et, à un certain degré, cette pièce a été alimentée par la colère. Mais, elle est bien plus profonde que cela. J’ai voulu donner une réponse artistique aux événements, élaborer une histoire exemplaire. A l’époque, mon interprétation de cette histoire était litigieuse – après tout, les deux tiers de Stuff Happens proviennent de mon imagination, ce qui en fait une fiction -, mais rien de ce qui a émergé par la suite n’est venu discréditer mon interprétation.
Votre œuvre semble vouloir rendre compte de son temps. Est-ce la principale caractéristique de votre travail ?
D. H. : La principale caractéristique de mon travail est de vouloir laisser un témoignage sur ce que c’est que vivre à l’époque à laquelle je vis : tout d’abord, comme Balzac, en décrivant mon époque ; mais, aussi, comme Tchekhov ou Brecht, en en proposant ma propre vision.

Etes-vous de ceux qui ne croient qu’au théâtre politique ?
D. H. : Le théâtre est un mélange de milliers de choses différentes. Parallèlement au théâtre de divertissement, qui ne semble pas amené à beaucoup évoluer, la catégorie théâtrale à laquelle mes pièces appartiennent peut aussi exister. Il s’agit d’une catégorie qui vous permet d’envisager votre propre façon de vivre et vous donne un langage pour pourvoir en parler, qui vous donne des outils pour penser et pour ressentir.
Quel regard portez-vous sur le théâtre français contemporain ?
D. H. : Le théâtre français n’a jamais pris le virage que le théâtre britannique a pris dans les années 1950. Depuis cette époque, en Angleterre, nous attendons du théâtre qu’il nous renvoie le reflet de la société dans laquelle nous vivons, qu’il soit le lieu où nous pouvons voir nos propres vies mises en lumière. Mais en France, depuis la Nouvelle Vague, c’est le cinéma qui remplit cette fonction, attirant à lui les acteurs, les écrivains et les metteurs en scène les plus brillants. Pour cette raison, la France dispose d’un cinéma étonnant, mais d’un théâtre désespérément démodé et inintéressant. Le cinéma anglais est irrégulier, inégal, il n’approche en rien la profondeur du vôtre. Mais, en revanche, l’Angleterre peut compter sur un théâtre bien plus essentiel que le théâtre français.
