« J’ai voulu jouer ici avec la variété et le croisement des langues, des sons, des sens. »
En 2008, l’Europe proclamait l’« année du dialogue interculturel ». En quoi cette question vous a-t-elle inspiré ?
David Lescot : Je regarde souvent ces « grands » programmes avec distance. Une année pour le dialogue, c’est très peu quand même… Nous sommes depuis entrés dans l’« année de la créativité ». Et à peine s’en aperçoit-on que, en général, c’est fini. Cela montre le décalage entre la perception des populations et les programmes décidés d’en haut, à la fois extrêmement ambitieux et totalement confidentiels. C’est un peu ça, l’Europe ! Mais la question du dialogue n’a pas cessé de m’intéresser, en tant que matière même du théâtre. J’ai voulu jouer ici avec la variété et le croisement des langues, des sons, des sens. Une linguiste vante ainsi les mérites de « l’intercompréhension passive », méthode pratiquée en hauts lieux : chacun s’exprime dans sa propre langue et la conversation se déroule sans passer par un interprète. C’est très sérieux, très technique, et le nom est drôle. Tout ce que j’aime.
Vous brossez un noir tableau de la condition de l’artiste face à la bureaucratie européenne…
D. L. : Aujourd’hui, l’artiste voit l’Europe comme un coffre-fort, qui, en retour, au mieux l’instrumentalise, au pire l’ignore. Changer cette relation prendra du temps et exige une volonté concrète et imaginative, défendue par les artistes eux-mêmes et pas seulement par des institutions ou des directives. L’idée la plus réelle de l’Europe, la confrontation directe avec diverses cultures européennes peut avoir lieu dans les théâtres, à travers les invitations faites aux créateurs étrangers !
Dans L’Européenne, vous évoquez l’histoire d’une femme juive, qui traverse les sombres ghettos de l’histoire. Quel lien entretenez-vous avec cette mémoire ?
D. L. : Cette histoire est presque celle de ma grand-mère, juive polonaise arrivée en France dans les années 30. L’immigration des Juifs d’Europe de l’Est vers l’Ouest est une histoire typiquement européenne. Ils ont dû adopter une culture, une langue, un mode de vie… et on les a ramenés de force à peu près là d’où ils étaient partis.
On retrouve ici la musique, non seulement parce qu’elle est jouée en scène mais également à travers les personnages du compositeur, des musiciens. Quel est son « rôle » ?
D. L. : « L’Européenne » sonne comme un titre musical. On y suit les pérégrinations d’un compositeur obsédé par la création d’un nouvel hymne européen, œuvre qui connaîtra un destin aussi extraordinaire qu’imprévu. Le spectacle prend la forme d’une revue, tout en restant structuré par une fable et des personnages, dont des musiciens. L’instrumentation choisie évoque aussi les pays de l’Est, allusion à l’entrée des douze pays de l’ancien bloc soviétique dans l’Union depuis 2004.
Dans la pièce, la responsable du programme européen s’adresse au public comme à une assemblée d’interprètes. Quel parallèle faites-vous avec le travail du spectateur ?
D. L. : Tout comme l’interprète, le spectateur déchiffre, sélectionne, retient, évacue, synthétise, construit… ordonne le sens. Et de même que l’interprète ne traduit pas tout, le spectateur ne retient pas tout. Il y a sans doute une part du spectacle qui lui échappe.
Comme dans la Commission centrale de l’enfance, solo que vous reprenez, on sent une drôlerie désenchantée qui innerve tout le récit. Etes-vous un ironique mélancolique ?
D. L. : Disons que j’aime les sentiments mêlés, le bonheur et la douleur, l’état furtif des moments de grâce, le rire appliqué à des sujets graves, l’humour cruel…
