« J’ai rencontré le génial Sébastien Surel, violoniste du Trio Talweg, sur un concert où Richard Galliano et moi-même étions les invités. Sébastien était là avec son quatuor à cordes. Et j’ai été frappé par sa liberté rythmique par rapport au tempo et aux accords. Il fait partie de cette nouvelle génération de musiciens classiques qui ne fonctionne pas avec dans la tête une grille hiérarchique mais qui est au contraire très au fait de tous les styles musicaux et ne juge une musique que sur sa qualité. Depuis quelques années et de fil en aiguille, nous avons commencé à travailler ensemble…

La question de la collaboration entre musiciens de styles différents est d’abord une question de priorités. Mais les priorités ont tendance à se scléroser quand on ne les remet pas en question de temps en temps. Il faut les secouer ! Mais c’est aussi et d’abord une question de diapason rythmique. Le rythme est pour moi le ballon dont le gaz est la mélodie, le tempo et l’harmonie. Si on le perce le ballon éclate ! Les âmes rythmiquement connectées se reconnaissent au-delà des styles. Maria Bethania et Maria Joao Pires, Bobby McFerrin et Yo Yo Ma, Elvis Costello et Anne Sofi von Otter ou encore mon travail avec Natalie Dessay qui continuera l’année prochaine sur un nouveau disque. Je suis sûr et certain qu’Ella Fitzgerald et Maria Callas auraient fait des choses formidables si elles avaient travaillé ensemble. C’est le rythme qui nous donne des frontières à redéfinir pour que ces collaborations n’aboutissent pas à de la « soupe ». Personne ne doit marcher stylistiquement sur les plates-bandes des autres. La liberté est aussi une question de goût. »
