Entre le début de l’ébullition à Nanterre le 3 mai 1968 et le week-end de la Pentecôte qui, à la fin du mois, vit l’essence à nouveau disponible pour que la révolte finisse de s’égayer sur les routes, le Général De Gaulle dut subir les assauts d’une contestation qui signèrent la fin d’un charisme et d’une légitimité politiques jusque là indiscutés. Jacques Foccart, le « Monsieur Afrique » de l’Elysée, collaborateur et fidèle d’un homme dont il avait assuré le retour au pouvoir dix ans auparavant, se fit le mémorialiste précis des années qu’il passa dans l’ombre et au service du pouvoir, organisant des déjeuners avec les « nègres » reçus au « château » pour y planifier l’exploitation des anciennes colonies et servant à De Gaulle à la fois de confident, de conseiller et d’exutoire à ses colères. Choisissant d’adapter à la scène des extraits du journal de Foccart, Jean-Louis Benoit dresse non pas tant le portrait d’une France en révolte que celui d’hommes d’Etat coupés des réalités sociétales et politiques, considérant, à l’instar de De Gaulle, les étudiants comme des « gamins rigolos », les CRS comme des barbouzes à doper à la gnôle et les Français comme des veaux…
Un ballet de clowns tristes
Mai 68 apparaît donc dans ce spectacle tel que les événements furent considérés par les réactionnaires au pouvoir : un hoquet de l’Histoire que devaient suffire à calmer les accords de Grenelle. Rien sur les morts de Sochaux, rien sur les échos mondiaux d’un conflit qui secoua la planète de Mexico jusqu’au Vietnam : 68 est un soubresaut aux yeux de De Gaulle qui, selon les mots de Jean-Louis Benoit, « ne comprend pas sa mort » ni qu’il est devenu « un héros inutile, un roi nu ». C’est la cruauté de cet aveuglement que Jean-Louis Benoit parvient habilement à mettre en scène en transformant la pléiade de conseillers gravitant autour de De Gaulle en clowns pathétiques et grotesques, aussi incapables que leur maître de saisir le sens de l’Histoire. La scénographie d’Alain Chambon pose des grandes boîtes sur le plateau et leur utilisation permet de rythmer efficacement les étapes de cette comédie grinçante. Interprétée par des comédiens truculents, cette plongée dans le secret du pouvoir en offre une vision cynique et drôle, sardonique et finalement très pessimiste…
