Habitué du Festival d’Avignon – on se souvient notamment de Mefisto for ever et d’Atropa, La Vengeance de la paix, deux volets remarquablement aboutis d’une trilogie sur le pouvoir, présentés en 2007 et 2008 -, Guy Cassiers revient avec le premier opus d’une nouvelle trilogie consacrée à l’immense et foisonnant roman-monde inachevé de Robert Musil (1880-1942), tableau politique, poétique et ironique d’une société viennoise à quelques mois de la guerre, agonisant en toute inconscience, absorbée par ses rêves et ses illusions, en une sorte d’« Apocalypse joyeuse » (selon le mot d’Hermann Broch). Avec des protagonistes marchant tranquillement à la lisière du volcan, imaginant une nouvelle Europe sans réaliser que la leur est en train de s’effondrer. Avec aussi un concentré d’esprits brillants et humanistes (que les nazis se chargèrent d’exterminer), et une population en grande partie aveugle et enfermée dans ses constructions mentales.
Voyage dans un univers mental
Que de désenchantement peut provoquer un tel monde ! L’auteur a voulu dans son œuvre contenir la totalité d’un monde, englobant ses contradictions et la course affolante et entêtante de la société humaine. Guy Cassiers, qui a déjà réalisé un travail de même nature en adaptant pour la scène La Recherche du temps perdu de Proust, propose au spectateur de « voyager dans l’univers mental des personnages et dans celui de Musil lui-même, au moment où il écrit son roman. » Qualifiée de “portrait de groupe“ par le metteur en scène, cette première partie présente d’abord la galerie des personnages, puis ils racontent leurs rêves et leurs doutes, et pour finir le volcan s’effondre. Guy Cassiers utilise la vidéo, ainsi que deux tableaux célèbres, La Cène de Léonard de Vinci, et L’Entrée du Christ à Bruxelles de James Ensor, pour figurer le passage d’une société organisée à une société explosée. « Musil est un excellent agitateur pour nous obliger à réfléchir sur notre situation », dit Guy Cassiers, qui développe un travail scénique précis, fin et évocateur, permettant de tenir à distance le réel, et de le repenser.
