Depuis ses débuts de chorégraphe, les thèmes des spectacles de Chantal Loïal s’inscrivent dans l’histoire et la société. Mais c’est On t’appelle Vénus, créé en 2011, qui ancre son travail dans sa dimension politique et sa revendication créole. Cette création poignante dénonce le destin tragique de Saartjie Baartman, la Vénus Hottentote, qui, de 1810 à 1815, vécut l’enfer des foires européennes, exposée comme un animal exotique. Pour commémorer les dix ans de cette pièce, Chantal Loïal crée un nouvel opus, De Vénus à Miriam au pas de mon chant, et invite deux nouvelles artistes féminines à participer à l’aventure, la chanteuse lyrique martiniquaise Marie-Claude Bottius, et Kidi Bebey, autrice française d’origine camerounaise. Dans cette version, les combats anticolonialistes d’hier rejoignent les luttes contre le racisme et les discriminations d’aujourd’hui. Ainsi, Kidi Bebey établit par ses mots le fil invisible qui relie la Vénus sud-africaine et Miriam Makeba, la chanteuse militante anti-apartheid du XXe siècle.
