Très tôt partagée entre ses deux passions, la mer et les livres, Anita Conti, née à l’aube du vingtième siècle, le traversa en pionnière de la vie maritime. Entre les morutiers et les saleurs perdus dans le brouillard de Terre-Neuve et les chalutiers des eaux chaudes de l’Afrique, seule au milieu des travailleurs de la baille au courage et à l’esprit de camaraderie desquels elle rend un affectueux hommage, elle a arpenté tous les océans et côtoyé tous ceux qui en exploitent les ressources, s’insurgeant contre les excès et les gaspillages de la pêche et imaginant des alternatives au pillage systématique, militant pour l’aquaculture et le développement durable dès les années 60. Jeanne Champagne a choisi, parmi les témoignages ethnographiques précieux de la dame au Rolleiflex, des extraits de Racleurs d’océans qu’interprète Gwénaëlle David, jeune comédienne au visage pur et serein évoquant Brancusi, que l’exaltation dont le texte est porteur vient éclairer comme de l’intérieur.
Dire la beauté des choses et la vérité des hommes
On suit donc Anita Conti dans son périple septentrional en compagnie des Terre-Neuvas, ces hommes rudes à la tâche venus tirer des eaux froides le trésor précieux sitôt cristallisé dans le sel, la morue, éviscérée et aplatie à la chaîne, dans le silence blanc d’une brume déprimante, au risque des tempêtes et des rencontres terribles avec les icebergs meurtriers. Gwénaëlle David mime l’âpreté des métiers de la mer et investit les espaces ménagés par une scénographie inventive pour recomposer toutes les postures et toutes les figures de l’existence à bord. Le très beau travail de composition sonore de Bernard Valléry, qui ressuscite les bruits et la sérénité océaniques autour de La chanson de Solveig de Grieg, lancinante et poignante, et les lumières de Franck Thévenon, remarquablement équilibrées entre réalisme et onirisme, soutiennent la beauté d’une proposition qui réussit le pari d’une adéquation avec le texte de Conti, qui mêle subtilement évocations poétiques voire lyriques et descriptions minutieuses et confondantes de vérité, dans une langue qui sait embellir la précision technique d’incrustations métaphysiques. Et quand le soleil se lève en vue de Saint-Jean de Terre-Neuve, l’éternité est retrouvée, évidence poétique et marine que Jeanne Champagne illustre de façon réussie en ce beau spectacle.
