C’est au fond d’un trou creusé pour une tombe, que Victor, le fossoyeur, découvre un enfant de 10 ans. Celui-ci déclare vouloir mourir parce que sa mère le bat. Victor le convainc de sortir de la fosse, de l’accompagner dans un autre cimetière, celui des gitans, pour y rencontrer de nouvelles mères. Scellant le départ d’une autre vie, Victor donne un nouveau nom à l’enfant : il le baptise Debout… « Malgré la gravité de la situation, explique Christine Pouquet, je souhaite mettre en évidence la force d’espoir qui s’exprime dans cette pièce pour en faire une ode à la vie. Avec Debout, en très peu de mots, Nathalie Papin crée un univers où l’essentiel est dit avec force et simplicité. Son talent est de rendre ce voyage initiatique universel. Il n’est plus seulement le voyage d’un enfant solitaire, mais celui de tout être humain aspirant au bonheur. Debout est un conte philosophique d’une extrême profondeur qui touchera petits et grands. »
