D’après vous, Dommage qu’elle soit une putain est-elle avant tout une pièce sur l’amour, sur la transgression ou sur l’implosion de l’ordre social ?
Declan Donnellan : Fondamentalement, c’est une pièce qui traite de tous ces thèmes-là en même temps. Mais Dommage qu’elle soit une putain est, avant tout, un regard plein d’humanité porté sur la passion illicite qui lie un frère et une sœur, une exploration saisissante de notre capacité à transgresser les règles – de notre besoin absolu de transgresser les règles. La vie repose souvent sur la désobéissance. La pièce de John Ford nous montre que ceux qui pensent ne pas avoir à obéir aux lois parce qu’ils sont « spéciaux », ceux qui pensent bénéficier d’une dérogation parce qu’ils sont supérieurement intelligents finissent, au bout du compte, par avoir de gros problèmes.
Quel est l’aspect le plus “révolutionnaire” de cette pièce ?
D. D. : Sans doute la façon dont elle questionne la notion de tabou. La raison pour laquelle cette pièce continue à être aussi forte plus de 300 ans après sa création ne tient pas uniquement au fait qu’elle soit écrite de façon aussi brillante et aussi sensible, mais également au fait qu’elle porte un éclairage sur un tabou singulier, qui n’a jamais réellement été exploré. Parfois, on entend dire que tous les tabous s’effondrent. Je ne crois absolument pas à cela. La place croissante que nous accordons aux tabous dans notre société reste un mystère psychanalytique. La grande majorité d’entre nous est, aujourd’hui encore, entièrement soumis au tabou de l’inceste. Personne n’a jamais cherché à remettre en cause ce tabou. Quelque part, au sein de nos réflexions sur l’inceste, se dresse le mur de nos propres limites.

Quel regard le spécialiste de Shakespeare que vous êtes porte-t-il sur le théâtre de John Ford ?
D. D. : On pense que Ford aurait assisté à des représentations de pièces de Shakespeare lorsqu’il était jeune et, qu’il aurait même rencontré Shakespeare. Ces deux auteurs ne partagent pas le même univers stylistique, mais leurs sources d’inspiration sont cependant très proches. Shakespeare est absolument obsédé par l’amour, thème qu’il a interrogé de manière exhaustive, à partir de tous les points de vue possibles. De la même façon, l’amour – à travers ses aspects les plus éclatants comme les plus sordides – est au centre de Dommage qu’elle soit une putain. Cette pièce a de nombreux points communs avec le théâtre de Shakespeare, notamment dans la façon de mettre en lumière les aspects destructeurs de l’amour et notre capacité à nous enfermer dans nos illusions.
La direction d’acteurs occupe une place fondamentale dans vos spectacles. Qu’est-ce qui, pour vous, doit se situer au cœur de la relation qui relie l’acteur au plateau ?
D. D. : Parler du jeu des acteurs est difficile, car « parler de » tend souvent à dire des généralités, or les généralités masquent la singularité des choses. Le jeu d’un bon acteur est toujours spécifique. Jouer est un réflexe, un mécanisme qui vise à assurer l’essor et la survie de l’acteur. Le travail du comédien repose sur deux fonctions précises du corps humain : les sens et l’imagination. Finalement, à travers les interrelations de ces deux fonctions, le travail de l’interprète comme du directeur d’acteur consiste essentiellement à examiner le plus profondément possible la nature de l’être humain. Depuis la scène, il s’agit donc de retourner à la vie.
