Cecilia Bengolea et vous êtes plutôt connus pour des performances, des recherches « d’avant-garde »… Vous nous avez surpris en proposant un programme tiré de la danse libre : en quoi cette esthétique vous a-t-elle attirés ?
François Chaignaud : En 2007, une amie historienne à laquelle je demandais où trouver des éléments sur le cambré, sur l’apparition du désir d’ « aller en arrière » en danse, m’a conseillé de me rendre au cours de Suzanne Bodak, une élève de François Malkovsky (1889-1982). J’y suis allé avec Cecilia Bengolea et nous avons eu un véritable choc : ce cours ouvrait sur un pan méconnu, presque oublié de l’histoire de la danse, et engageait une pratique de la danse très dépaysante pour nous, au sein d’un groupe d’amateurs principalement composé de retraités, qui faisaient des rondes, évoluaient avec des balles, des foulards… C’est une danse qui repose sur l’idéal d’un corps libre et joyeux, avec un rapport puissant à l’expressivité. Chaque danse a un titre (La mer, Berceuse, Au printemps…) et se veut directe, transparente. Il ne s’agit absolument pas d’une danse cryptée qui chercherait à multiplier les significations – comme c’est souvent le cas dans les pratiques plus contemporaines. Le rapport à la musique est très précis, avec le temps fort sur la fin du geste, ce qui permet de représenter un corps émancipé : alors que la danse est intimement liée à la structure musicale, on a l’impression que c’est la musique qui suit le corps… C’est une technique extrêmement riche, que nous n’avons pas fini de découvrir et de comprendre.
Comment, aujourd’hui, donner à voir de telles danses ?
F. C. : C’est une grande question ! Nous voulons donner à voir ce que les danses transmises par Suzanne Bodak – et qu’elle interprète sur scène avec nous – ont de spécial, de très étranger aujourd’hui. Il s’agit donc de les « respecter », d’inviter les spectateurs au plaisir inhabituel d’une danse de joie et d’un rapport étroit avec la musique. Mais nous ne pouvons pas pour autant – surtout dans le cadre grandiose du cloître des Carmes ! – présenter ce plaisir naïvement, comme une ode à un corps « naturel », libre, sain… Nous aimerions aussi que le spectateur nous voie nous emparer de ces danses, plonger dans cette esthétique et en ressortir, en mesurant la distance qui nous en sépare, le travail qui nous y mène et les questions qu’elles posent.

C. : Il s’agit d’une création collective (Cecilia Bengolea, François Chaignaud, Marlene Monteiro Freitas, Trajal Harrell) qui s’inscrit dans une série initiée par Trajal Harrell autour d’une « fiction historique » : que se serait-il passé, dans les années 1960 à New York, si un membre de la scène du Voguing avait rencontré l’un des pionniers de la post-modern dance ? Le Voguing a émergé à Harlem et est pratiqué principalement par des gays, lesbiennes et transgenres afro-américains et latinos, dans le cadre de bals, de défilés, ou de compétitions : c’est une culture qui repose sur le fait de s’approprier des identités diverses, issues entre autres du monde de la mode, du luxe, du business… Une sorte d’incandescence des corps, capables de se métamorphoser. (M)IMOSA n’est ni un document sur le Voguing, ni la reconstitution d’un bal. La rencontre avec la communauté new yorkaise, la fréquentation des bals ont plutôt été comme des « shots », l’injection d’une autre réalité dans nos pratiques. Comme un encouragement à affirmer ce que l’on désirerait être, faire ou représenter – quelle que soit la distance entre le rêve et la réalité.
