Au-delà de l’existant, au-delà du régime mimétique, le théâtre de Romeo Castellucci pose question, ébranle les certitudes et réactive la réception. Son théâtre radical et sensoriel, forgé par des images physiques, puissantes, parfois brutales, s’aventure hors des champs de la conscience et du présent. Le maître italien s’inspire ici librement de l’ouvrage phare d’Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), qui, de retour d’un long voyage dans les tout jeunes Etats-Unis d’Amérique, analysa ce nouveau modèle de démocratie représentative dont il souligne les promesses, les atouts et les limites.
A Puritan Foundation
Un modèle en rupture totale avec le cadre athénien et l’expérience « antibiotique » de la tragédie. « On assiste au déclin de l’expérience de la tragédie en tant que forme de conscience et de connaissance politique de l’être. » relève Romeo Castellucci. Il fait théâtre de la grandeur de cette perte, qu’il relie à « a Puritan Foundation », selon les termes de Tocqueville. Dans cet instant d’indétermination qui précède la politique, ce rite sans nom vise à retrouver la fonction première du théâtre, « double obscur et nécessaire du combat politique et des formes que prennent les sociétés de l’espèce humaine ».
