Toujours se méfier des a priori… On savait le pianiste Denis Matsuev grand virtuose, au jeu puissant pour ne pas dire parfois un brin tonitruant : il vous avale le Troisième Concerto de Rachmaninov comme s’il s’agissait d’une partition facile, faisant claquer le piano dans une cadence de haute voltige, passant par-dessus l’orchestre dans les dernières pages, comme si de rien n’était. On le pensait donc plus costaud que subtil, plus piano-piano que grand musicien… Et puis il enregistre Les Saisons de Tchaïkovski qu’il associe au Petrouchka de Stravinsky (RCA) et ce sont les douze pièces intimistes du premier qui emportent l’adhésion, par leur candeur, leur tendresse et leur raffinement. Cet automne, Matsuev vient au TCE avec un sacré programme : Appassionata et Opus 111 de Beethoven en première partie, Sonate en si mineur de Liszt en seconde. Des œuvres que l’on doit affronter les yeux dans les yeux, que l’on ne peut que servir avec humilité et détermination, dominé par leur grandeur.
