Quelle démarche d’écriture a amené Christine Montalbetti à adapter l’œuvre de Stevenson ?
Denis Podalydès : C’est au cours d’une conversation amicale — nous nous connaissons depuis 25 ans — que j’ai demandé à Christine de lire le roman de Stevenson, et de s’arrêter plus particulièrement sur le dernier chapitre, la confession du docteur Jekyll. Deux mois plus tard, elle me donnait la première mouture de ce monologue, Le Cas Jekyll.
Qu’est-ce qui vous paraît le plus intéressant dans son texte ?
D. P. : Son style précis, enjoué, infiniment délicat et musical, ses torsades, ses arrêts, ses reprises, bref son rythme. Tout me plaît, m’enchante et me touche dans ce texte, à la fois proche de l’original, parfois même directement inspiré d’une page, d’une action, d’un moment ou d’un fait du livre — les atmosphères, la brume de Londres, les bords de la Tamise, l’évocation de la jeunesse de Jekyll — et soudain très écarté. Le personnage devient alors un personnage de Christine Montalbetti, l’une de ces figures aériennes, drolatiques, un peu fantomatiques, incertaines et en même temps très rigoureusement dessinées, que l’on trouve dans ses romans. Son style permet une interprétation très libre, contemporaine et transposée, dans une forme littéraire exigeante, tenue, pleine d’humour néanmoins, qui fait que le monologue tient théâtralement debout.
Quel regard portez-vous sur le personnage de Jekyll ?
D. P. : C’est la contradiction en personne et en acte. Jekyll réussit à incarner la dualité humaine, en inventant le double susceptible de prendre en charge la part négative, maudite et interdite du sujet Jekyll, débarrassé autant de ses bas instincts que de sa mauvaise conscience.

Ce pourrait être aussi une métaphore ludique du paradoxe du comédien. Dans ce spectacle, ce qui me guide, de manière obscure et à peine réfléchie, et qui trouve son incarnation dans ce personnage double, dans le dédoublement lui-même, c’est l’interrogation sur la pulsion de jeu : d’où vient ce désir, chez moi si fort, si permanent, de vouloir jouer, jouer encore, toujours jouer ? Hyde, en moi, c’est l’incarnation et la pression de ce désir auquel j’ai parfois l’impression de tout sacrifier.
A travers ce spectacle, vous cherchez donc à explorer cette zone de l’humain qui nourrit la vocation d’acteur…
D. P. : Oui. Je ne prétends pas jeter un regard sur l’humanité en elle-même. J’essaie de faire l’autoportrait de l’acteur que je suis à l’âge que j’ai, mais un autoportrait évidemment en jeu, contradictoire, comique, un peu inquiétant, entièrement théâtral, puisqu’à l’arrivée, je ne sais pas si on en sait davantage. En tout cas, moi, je n’en sais pas plus. L’invention de Hyde libère et détruit Jekyll. Il s’y adonne, s’y perd, et ne peut plus juguler les excès de son double grotesque, finit par en mourir. Moi, je ne crois pas en être à l’autodestruction. Je me situe encore au premier temps de la métamorphose, pendant lequel le "petit gnome hilare", comme écrit Christine Montalbetti, gambade joyeusement, de son pas léger et bizarre, dans les rues embrumées de Londres.
Quel cadre de mise en scène avez-vous élaboré pour ce monologue ?
D. P. : Nous avons essayé, Eric Ruf, Emmanuel Bourdieu et moi, de conférer au spectacle la plus grande musicalité possible — en épousant les rythmes du texte —, de lui donner à la fois la légèreté nécessaire, mais aussi la dose d’ironie et d’inquiétude.
