Comment est né ce projet de concert-lecture?
Denis Podalydès : C’est Jeanine Roze qui s’est chargée de tout, m’a contacté, fait rencontrer Pierre-Laurent Aimard, s’est arrangée pour les disponibilités, m’a donné le texte, etc. J’ai accepté pour le bonheur de jouer avec un musicien du calibre de Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Je dis « jouer », c’est « lire » bien sûr qu’il faut entendre, mais dans le cas d’un "duo" de cette sorte entre une part de jeu. Même s’il s’agit d’un grand écrivain comme Kertész…

Comment allez-vous aborder ce travail "d’interprétation" d’un texte aussi spécifique? Peut-on être un "lecteur" neutre ou allez-vous ici rester avant tout "comédien"?
Denis Podalydes : Pour ce que j’en sais, "Etre sans destin" réclame de ne pas faire le malin, c’est un euphémisme. Il ne s’agit pas d’être neutre, d’appliquer une neutralité de bon aloi qui consisterait à se tenir à distance respectueuse, comme on le fait parfois devant un texte intimidant, chargé de trop d’implications historiques ou politiques. Il faut entrer dans la matière littéraire elle-même, trouver le rythme, débusquer dans le style la voix propre qui fera entendre clairement et aisément le texte, de manière à ce qu’il soit reçu avec toute l’intelligibilité requise. C’est la première nécessité. Et cela demande un engagement discret, engagement qui exige parfois le retrait pur et simple de l’acteur — celui qui veut jouer, se rendre "expressif" —, tant il est fait de mille précautions et délicatesses, mais l’important est que cet engagement ne se décrète pas a priori. Il se trouve dans les mots eux-mêmes, la phrase. Et puis cela se fera au contact de Pierre-Laurent Aimard, en interaction.
Qu’attendez-vous de ce "concert" sur le plan artistique, personnel et émotionnel ?
Denis Podalydes : Ce que j’attends de toute manifestation de ce genre, qui n’a lieu qu’une fois, un soir, réunissant des personnes de mondes différents, qui ne sont pas appelées à se retrouver comme je sais que je retrouve périodiquement mes camarades de la Comédie-Française. J’attends le tout petit moment de grâce, de quelques secondes, parfois imperceptible, qui justifie tout, emporte la chose, et qui fait qu’on se dit après: oui, avec untel, je me souviens, nous avons fait cela, c’était pas mal. Plus le petit instant magique en question a eu lieu de toute évidence, plus le souvenir en est lumineux, et très simple dans son expression.
Quel est votre relation avec la musique classique ? En jouez-vous, en écoutez-vous’
Denis Podalydès : Ma relation est passionnée, tardive, désordonnée, erratique. Je n’en joue pas. J’en écoute de manière souvent obsessionnelle, ou alors machinale (France Musique jusqu’à qu’un morceau vienne happer mon oreille), souvent en vue d’un spectacle dont je prépare la mise en scène, exercice de préparation que je ne peux dissocier de l’écoute régulière et maniaque d’un choix de musiques que je peux d’ailleurs décider très arbitrairement. Mes goûts sont en formation. Je pourrai dire aussi bien, pour l’heure : les quatuors de Beethoven, l’œuvre pour piano de Schumann (j’en ai beaucoup écouté pour la mise en scène de Fantasio à la Comédie-Française), Haendel. En ce moment, j’écoute un concerto pour clarinette de Weber… Je n’ai pas encore commencé à répéter avec Pierre-Laurent, et l’attends impatiemment et joyeusement.
