Presque cent ans déjà… Cent ans avant que le vieux continent ne bascule dans la fureur sanglante de la Grande guerre, avant que la gangrène des idéologies totalitaires et de l’antisémitisme ne s’infiltre lentement au cœur des peuples, jusqu’à la catastrophe, jusqu’à l’Holocauste… Dans quel état l’Europe se trouve-t-elle aujourd’hui ? Quels échos du passé frappent-ils au seuil du présent ? En observateur attentif des discrètes violences que pratique notre époque, Christoph Marthaler scrute le climat idéologique actuel, là où rôdent les ombres hideuses du racisme et du nationalisme. Créé en mai dernier dans l’ancien Parlement de Vienne, Derniers jours. Une veillée. est dédié à « la musique des victimes » – neuf compositeurs tchèques, polonais ou autrichiens persécutés par le nazisme. « Le théâtre peut être également un lieu de la commémoration. », explique le metteur en scène suisse. « Dans mes spectacles, je pose la question du souvenir et travaille essentiellement en musique. C’est pour moi un médium qui permet de faire surgir des souvenirs et de soulever des émotions. » Mêlant musique, documents réels et textes fictifs, cette pièce dessine à l’acide drolatique le portrait de l’égoïsme populiste et belliqueux toujours prêt à resurgir.
