La Seconde Guerre mondiale a souvent nourri les projets scéniques du directeur du Théâtre National de Nice. « Intrigué, choqué, violenté » par cette fracture de l’histoire, Daniel Benoin se propose aujourd’hui d’en explorer une nouvelle fois les méandres, par le biais d’une œuvre abordant le thème de l’épuration. Des Jours et des nuits à Chartres, du dramaturge et romancier suédois Henning Mankell (auteur ayant acquis une renommée internationale grâce aux enquêtes de l’inspecteur Kurt Wallander) revient sur le destin d’une certaine Simone, jeune femme tondue et publiquement humiliée à la libération pour avoir entretenu une liaison avec un soldat allemand. Le photographe Robert Capa immortalisa l’image de cette femme avançant dans une des rues principales de Chartres, l’enfant né de cet amour dans les bras, vilipendée par la foule qui la suit jusqu’à la prison dans laquelle on va l’enfermer dans l’attente de son procès. C’est l’existence de cette amoureuse de la honte que réinvente ici Henning Mankell, à travers le regard que porte Robert Capa sur sa propre photographie ainsi que sur les troubles de l’immédiate après-guerre.
Les affres de l’épuration
De flashbacks en retours dans le laboratoire du photographe, Des Jours et des nuits à Chartres avance comme une sorte de scénario de téléfilm visant, par le biais du destin de Simone, à mettre en évidence les fourvoiements de l’épuration, à questionner la légitimité morale des condamnations pour « délit d’amour ». Cela, sans grandes évidences dramaturgiques. La mise en scène de Daniel Benoin est à l’avenant de cet aspect proprement narratif : elle illustre le texte de la pièce sans réussir à créer de réel moment d’intensité, de véritable élan de théâtre. Pourtant, les sept comédiens du spectacle (dont Fanny Valette dans le rôle de Simone et Olivier Sitruk dans celui de Robert Capa, mais aussi du soldat allemand dont la jeune femme tombe amoureuse) manifestent une indéniable envie de bien faire. Ils s’appliquent à dessiner toutes les arêtes psychologiques des leurs personnages. Mais l’épreuve du plateau est sans appel, leurs efforts ne portent pas leurs fruits. Les deux heures de la représentation passent, scène après scène, ne rendant compte que de manière explicative des enjeux humains, philosophiques et politiques que traverse la pièce de Henning Mankell.
