Un seul d’entre eux est resté au village. C’est chez lui, dans sa ferme, que ce groupe d’amis d’enfance a décidé de fêter le passage à l’an 2000. Portrait d’une génération qui fait le tour de ses illusions au sein d’un monde rural sur le déclin, Des traces d’absence sur le chemin met en scène « ce moment où l’on renonce aux rêves pour affronter ce que l’on est vraiment ». Une ferme, un chemin, un café : à travers les trois lieux qui se partagent l’espace scénique, Sylvie Ollivier met en scène une humanité ordinaire à l’avenir incertain. Une humanité interprétée à la fois par des comédiens professionnels et amateurs — ces derniers composant un chœur des habitants — afin de nourrir la représentation des échanges nés de cette confrontation. « Cette relation de proximité s’accorde profondément avec l’écriture de Françoise du Chaxel, pudique et simple, profonde », explique la metteure en scène. Une écriture qui, « lourde de la sédimentation des vies », « nous ouvre sur le mystère des âmes », saisit les personnages « au plus près, comme par une caméra qui ne perdrait aucun regard, aucune expression, même imperceptible ».
