La soirée débute par Le Portrait de l’Infante, œuvre très attendue du fait de la collaboration inédite entre Thierry Malandain et l’artiste plasticien espagnol Manolo Valdés. Celui-ci a livré au chorégraphe trois sculptures, Les Ménines, œuvres imposantes inspirées du célèbre tableau de Vélasquez. Comment danser en présence de pareils monuments ? A une telle occupation de l’espace, Malandain répond par une danse effrénée : solo, duos et mouvements d’ensemble se succèdent sans point d’orgue, comme pour habiter le temps. A l’histoire chargée portée par ces trois femmes, le chorégraphe réplique par de subtiles références glissées dans la fluidité du mouvement : des figures de chiens, de nains, de faunes suggèrent une animalité tout droit sortie des tableaux de Velasquez. Un univers parfois effrayant, à l’image de ce duo d’hommes qui met en scène l’horreur de la découverte de soi, quand elle ne correspond pas à une beauté identifiée.
Rendre palpable le feu qui brûle le corps
Finalement, chaque petite allusion fait vivre la danse de façon totalement indépendante vis-à-vis de la proposition plastique de Valdés. Les Ménines, trop statiques, ne pourront supporter la présence du mouvement et finiront en pierres tombales. Avec L’Amour Sorcier, deuxième pièce du programme, Thierry Malandain a su tenir son cap jusqu’au bout. D’une pièce à l’origine créée pour quatre interprètes, il fait une véritable ode au couple. Abandonnant la ligne narrative du livret, il sait tout de même rendre palpable le feu qui brûle le corps, et l’inspiration espagnole qui ébauche un zapateado ou qui redresse le torse des hommes. La présence inédite du corps de ballet dans une telle pièce donne un sens nouveau, comme un contrepoint au couple initial qui se détache par une gestuelle plus brute, plus animale. La femme, choisie comme une élue, se veut conquérante, garante d’un amour revenu d’entre les morts. Une vision très personnelle de L’Amour Sorcier, portée par des choix dramaturgiques judicieux et par une gestuelle qui reste dans le plus pur style Malandain.
