Dhafer Youssef donne le sentiment d’être habité par chaque note qu’il entonne, qu’elle soit instrumentale (sur son oud) ou vocale (avec son timbre de muezzin séraphique). Avec son dernier album (sorti en 2013 sur le label Okeh), le Tunisien pousse son art au sommet. Minimaliste, profond et solennel, son « Birds Requiem » a été conçu alors qu’il portait le deuil de sa mère. C’est dans ce contexte douloureux qu’il a écrit cette sorte de mini symphonie de l’absence. A ses côtés, on retrouve le guitariste norvégien Eivind Aarset. Déjà présent en 2003 dans un disque clé de Dhafer Youssef (« Digital Prophecy »), il participe à sculpter l’ambiance clair-obscur de ce requiem pas comme les autres. Résultat : la musique du Tunisien n’a jamais sonné aussi mystique.
