Dhafer Youssef a grandi dans un village de pêcheurs des environs de Monastir en Tunisie, où ses talents de chanteur ne sont pas passés inaperçus. Enfant, il faisait résonner sa voix du haut du minaret de la mosquée, et chantait dans les cérémonies religieuses. Le titre de son nouvel album, enregistré à Los Angeles avec la crème du jazz mondial (Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Ambrose Akinmusire…), fait-il écho à ces souvenirs d’enfance, alors que le musicien s’est imposé comme un ambassadeur qui a fait se rencontrer les traditions arabes et le oud avec les rythmes et les grooves des sociétés urbaines occidentales ? Sans doute. Entouré d’une équipe cosmopolite où l’on retrouve notamment le fidèle Nguyen Lê, guitariste qui a pris part à plusieurs de ses aventures musicales, Dhafer Youssef vient présenter « Street of Minarets » et son répertoire qui, ignorant les frontières et les styles, se nourrit à de nombreuses sources, de l’Inde, de l’Orient mais aussi de l’électro scandinave ou du jazz new-yorkais. Sa fusion, habitée par sa voix haut perchée, est une irrésistible invitation au voyage.
