Urologue, cardiologue, neurologue, dermatologue et autres spécialistes, plus un interne urgentiste rêvant d’une carte de visite comme d’un étendard ( « un merdaillon, voilà ce que j’étais »). C’est cet interne qui raconte l’histoire, son histoire, lors d’une fameuse nuit où un patient très spécial l’a amené à renoncer à la profession : exit le caducée. « Une pantomime verbale », où « chaque phrase est un geste », c’est ainsi que Daniel Pennac décrit son monologue, portait hyperbolique et drolatique du monde hospitalier, où les egos surdimensionnés de Diafoirus modernes ont la place d’honneur, où les symptômes et les diagnostics variés entament un ballet effréné, laissant de côté le sérieux de la chose pour souligner au contraire le comique des situations et des personnages. Ce patient alerte l’un après l’autre tous les services, concentrés à chaque fois sur une partie de son corps : « on aurait dit qu’il hésitait entre toutes les morts possibles ».
Médecine hyper-mécanisée et hyper-fragmentée
Pour porter à la scène les tribulations de Gérard Galvan, cet apprenti médecin, Daniel Pennac a demandé à Jean-Claude Cotillard de s’emparer du texte, après l’avoir vu avec bonheur à Avignon dans La vie en rose. Le texte se moque d’une médecine hyper-spécialisée, hyper-mécanisée et hyper-fragmentée, et surtout met en relief le destin singulier de Galvan, devenu réparateur d’automobiles. La mise en scène stylisée et sobre souligne les effets comiques et les mystères du rêve identitaire de ce jeune médecin sans les alourdir. Jean-Claude Cotillard n’encombre pas le plateau d’accessoires médicaux, au contraire il met l’accent sur le jeu théâtral, sur quelques emblèmes révélateurs – telles les cartes de visite aussi imposantes que l’orgueil de leurs propriétaires. C’est lui qui porte la pièce, avec sa voix et son corps, omniprésent et talentueux, tour à tour désabusé, enthousiaste, stressé ou désemparé. Les autres personnages illustrent son récit comme dans une bande dessinée. C’est dans cette incarnation d’un homme au destin contrarié, aux prises avec un univers difficile à appréhender, que la pièce se justifie, car il est vrai que l’attaque contre le corps médical ne peut qu’être anecdotique.
