La force et la ruse pour l’un, le droit et la constitution pour l’autre. Le premier affermissant le despotisme par la manipulation, le second se réjouissant de l’abolition des privilèges et réclamant la séparation des pouvoirs. Le double portrait que fait Maurice Joly de ces deux grands théoriciens politiques que furent Machiavel et Montesquieu relève, sinon de la caricature, au moins d’une lecture un peu hâtive d’œuvres bien plus complexes que ce que la postérité a retenu de leurs auteurs. Mais « si son Machiavel et son Montesquieu expriment des idées souvent éloignées de celles défendues par ces deux célèbres modèles, remarque le metteur en scène Hervé Dubourjal, cette épreuve des masques est une épreuve de vérité. » En effet, Maurice Joly signe avec cette pièce un pamphlet contre Napoléon III, et trouve le moyen, en ressuscitant les morts, de les faire parler en lieu et place des vivants.

Montesquieu est le masque de Joly, qui s’oppose aux gabegies du tyranneau, et « Machiavel, ce sera Napoléon III qui peindra lui-même son abominable crime », confie le dramaturge. Mais en inventant cette improbable situation au bord d’une plage déserte des Enfers, et en créant ce « dialogue politique brillant, au style époustouflant, à la dialectique fine et à l’humour dévastateur » (Hervé Dubourjal), Maurice Joly décrit des cœurs autant que des intelligences, et des personnages plus complexes qu’ils n’en ont d’abord l’air. Reprise souvent depuis sa création, adaptée par l’immense Pierre Tabard, cette pièce est l’occasion pour des comédiens souples, précis et fins, de retrouver ce renard et ce lion qu’ils ont déjà interprétés avec succès il y a quelques saisons.
