L’Athénée offre à la fantaisie baroque de Purcell un écrin parfaitement adapté. Premier opéra en langue anglaise, Didon et Énée (1689), s’il s’inspire des tragédies lyriques à la française, n’en a ni les dimensions ni même l’esprit, créant une forme et un univers propres à Purcell et à la musique anglaise – on en trouve d’évidents échos dans les opéras de chambre de Britten tel Le Viol de Lucrèce que l’Athénée avait accueilli il y a quelques années. Entourée du chœur de chambre Aedes et d’une douzaine de musiciens (Les Nouveaux Caractères) dirigés par le claveciniste Sébastien d’Hérin, Isabelle Druet, « révélation » des Victoires de la musique en 2010 et remarquable comédienne, tient le rôle de Didon avec l’énergie qu’elle déploie dans des répertoires variés, du baroque à la mélodie française.
