Les mises en scène de Dominique Pitoiset se distinguent par l’efficacité de leur lecture moderniste. Sa récente adaptation théâtrale de La Peau de chagrin de Balzac nous avait complètement conquis. Le directeur du Théâtre National de Bordeaux retrouve l’Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Paris avec qui il avait déjà monté L’Isola disabitata de Haydn en 2005. Associé à Stephen Taylor, il s’attaque à l’un des ouvrages les plus mythiques du répertoire : Didon et Enée, seul opéra de Purcell. Pour nous conter cette tragédie aussi concise qu’émouvante, les jeunes chanteurs de l’Atelier lyrique de Paris seront coachés par le chef Patrick Cohën-Akenine. Le violoniste, directeur musical des Folies françoises, aura sans doute fort à faire, tant ces jeunes gosiers sont souvent plus enclins à la projection lyrique qu’au phrasé baroque. Ceux-ci seront accompagnés par les instrumentistes du département de musique ancienne du Conservatoire de Paris. Une dimension pédagogique idoine pour cet ouvrage écrit par un compositeur âgé d’à peine trente ans.
